General Cargo Ships

Bank Line's tramper 'Ivy Bank'

Passenger Lounge

In the past, products such as electronic equipment, machinery, furniture, food, etc., were packed in boxes, crates and bags and loaded on board. It was a much more cumbersome method of loading, stowing and securing cargo and these ships also called at more ports along the route, making voyages longer and subject to frequent delays. While containerization has changed all that, certain overweight and oversize cargoes which cannot be held in containers, are still carried by general-cargo ships, as well as by more modern multipurpose and semi-containerships, Ro-Ro (Roll-on Roll-off) and reefer (refrigerated cargo) vessels.
